Harin Fernando, Deputy General Secretary of the United National Party (UNP), stated that the current government is still acting as if it were in the opposition. He made these remarks today (20) while arriving at the Badulla Magistrate’s Court in connection with a case filed against him for an alleged violation of election laws.
Speaking to the media, he noted that this is the first time in the country that a government has staged protests against the opposition—a clear indication of the direction in which the current administration is heading.
Commenting on a recent government rally held in Badulla, he mentioned that women were described as the government’s primary source of strength. While affirming his own respect for women, he suggested that their knowledge of politics is limited, leading him to suspect that they may have been misled. Harin Fernando stated that the creation of employment opportunities in Israel and Japan, as well as the establishment of an insulin manufacturing plant, were initiatives launched by members of his party. He further remarked that instead of inaugurating projects initiated by others, the current government should present its own projects.
He also noted that the ‘Metro’ bus service was an initiative launched by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. While expressing satisfaction with the current government’s agenda, he pointed out that the pace of its implementation is extremely slow.
