Bail Granted to Namal’s Secretary Arrested Over a Safe.

The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court ordered the release on bail of Sanjaya Samarasinghe, the secretary to Member of Parliament Namal Rajapaksa, who had been arrested by the Bribery Commission.

The court ordered that the suspect be released on two personal sureties of Rs. 1 million each and also imposed a travel ban, prohibiting him from leaving the country.

Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued this order after considering the submissions made by officials from the Bribery Commission and President’s Counsel Sampath Mendis, who appeared on behalf of the suspect.

On the night of the 16th, a team of Bribery Commission officials conducted a special search operation at Sanjaya Samarasinghe’s residence on Templers Road, Mount Lavinia. During the search, they took into custody a safe found on the premises. He was arrested yesterday on charges of failing to disclose the source of Rs. 1.8 million (18 lakh rupees) discovered inside that safe.
