The Parliamentary Select Committee investigating the incident involving the release of 323 containers from the Colombo Port without mandatory physical inspection has concluded its inquiry. The committee is currently preparing its final report, which is scheduled to be presented to Parliament in the coming weeks.
A committee member stated to the media that a draft of the report would first be circulated among committee members, and the final report would be prepared after incorporating their recommendations.
This controversial incident raised serious questions regarding the clearance procedures and supervisory mechanisms within Sri Lanka Customs and port operations. The opposition alleges that a number of containers belonging to the ‘red’ and ‘yellow’ categories—for which scanning and physical inspection are mandatory—have been released in this manner under suspicious circumstances.
