Deputy Inspector General (DIG) W.P.J. Senadheera stated that the regulation requiring all passengers in vehicles traveling on expressways to wear seatbelts has been strictly enforced since the 20th.
He made these remarks during a press conference regarding a traffic accident that occurred this morning (21) on the Southern Expressway—between Galanigama and Dodangoda involving a collision between several vehicles, including a bus traveling from Matara to Colombo.
Consequently, the DIG noted that several vehicles lacking seatbelts had to be turned away to prevent them from entering the expressway. Deputy Inspector General of Police W.P.J. Senadheera stated that wearing seatbelts is mandatory for rear-seat passengers as well, and that legal action will be taken against any passenger including the person seated in the middle of the rear seat who fails to wear one.
