Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena yesterday ordered the Director of the National Hospital to submit a report to the court on the health condition of former State Intelligence Service Chief Suresh Sale, who is under detention orders in connection with the Easter Sunday attacks.
The statement issued by the magistrate states that the report should clarify whether Suresh Sale needs further inpatient treatment or whether he can be discharged from the hospital.
This order was issued following a request made by Senior State Counsel Oswald Perera, appearing for the Criminal Investigation Department.
The State Counsel told the court that since Suresh Sale has been at the National Hospital for more than three months, investigators have been unable to record statements. He also stated that statements have already been obtained from people with connections to Sale and that further investigations are ongoing.
President’s Counsel Shavindra Fernando, appearing for Sale, did not object to the summoning of a hospital report, but pointed out that doctors have already advised on his client’s health condition.
He also emphasized that although his client is in a suitable state of health to give a statement, the Criminal Investigation Department has not yet attempted to obtain a statement from him.
