The Jaffna Magistrate’s Court has imposed a fine of Rs. 950,000 on a restaurant in Jaffna for selling a bottle of drinking water above the prescribed maximum retail price.
During a raid conducted by the Jaffna District Investigation Officers of the Consumer Affairs Authority, it was confirmed that a 1-liter bottled drinking water bottle had been sold to a consumer for Rs. 200, exceeding the prescribed maximum retail price of Rs. 120.
Accordingly, legal action has been taken against the relevant institution, and a fine was imposed when the case was taken up before the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court on the 25th.
Meanwhile, the Consumer Affairs Authority says that when purchasing an item, people should check the printed price and the prescribed maximum retail price and should also take care to obtain an accurate bill for the amount paid and keep it safe.
The Consumer Affairs Authority requests the public to report any information regarding overpricing or other violations of consumer laws to the Consumer Affairs Authority via the Consumer Hotline 1977 during office hours.
