The Chief Jailer of Negombo Prison, Wikrama Jayantha Kumara, who was serving at the prison when the incident that claimed the lives of 10 prison officers and 22 inmates occurred, appeared before Negombo Magistrate Shilani Perera yesterday (30) and gave evidence.
His testimony began at around 1.00 p.m. and continued until about 3.00 p.m.
After hearing the evidence, the Magistrate stated that the testimony contained highly sensitive information relating to the country’s national security. She said that making the contents of the testimony public could seriously endanger national security. Therefore, she ordered that no media organisation should publish any part of the testimony and instructed that the evidence be kept securely.
Meanwhile, prison officials also submitted to the court a detailed report on the 89 prison police officers who had been transferred from Welikada Prison to Negombo Prison. They also submitted a report on the individuals currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital in Colombo and Negombo Hospital.
