No evidence that eight-year-old schoolboy set fire to car

The Sri Lankan Police have issued a statement regarding a video circulating on social media showing an eight-year-old schoolboy, a student of the same school, setting fire to a car parked at a school in the Kurunegala area.

The police statement states that no evidence has been uncovered so far to prove that the student set fire to the car.

The incident was reported at a school in the Kurunegala area on July 3rd. The car that was set on fire is worth nearly 14 million. The statement states that investigations are underway into the incident and that the Kurunegala Police have initiated an investigation following a complaint that the eight-year-old child is responsible for the arson.

The child in the video circulating on social media was walking near the vehicle when it caught fire, but the police emphasize that there has been no eyewitness or forensic/scientific evidence to date to confirm that the child set the vehicle on fire.

The police say that the cause of the fire has also been referred to the Government Coroner to determine the exact cause.
