The first two surgeries performed in Sri Lanka using artificial intelligence and robotic technology have been successfully completed. The two surgeries were performed recently at a private hospital in Colombo, and are considered an important milestone that will take Sri Lanka’s healthcare system to a new technological era.
In one case, two medical specialists performed a hysterectomy on a 50-year-old woman with the help of robotic technology. The other surgery is reportedly a complex kidney surgery.
In a robotic surgery, the robot operates under the complete control of the surgeon. The doctor controls the robotic arm using a special control system, and the robotic system executes those movements inside the patient’s body with great precision. By using artificial intelligence and modern programming technology, this system is able to accurately perform even the most delicate movements that are difficult for the human hand.
Using these technologies, the patient’s bleeding is minimized. In addition, the patient receives many additional benefits such as not requiring large incisions, performing surgeries with high precision even in delicate areas, and reducing the risk of infection
