The Negombo Chief Magistrate today (09) ordered that all investigations conducted by the Negombo Headquarters Police into the clash that took place at the Negombo Prison, which left 28 people dead and caused property damage worth over Rs. 120 million, be transferred to the Criminal Investigations Department with immediate effect.
This order was issued to the Chief Inspector of Police, Negombo Headquarters, taking into account a request made by the department to the court on the instructions of the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department, Shani Abeysekara.
Submitting a further report to the court, the Criminal Investigations Department stated that the IGP, Attorney-at-Law Priyantha Weerasuriya, has ordered that the investigations currently being conducted by the Negombo Police regarding the prison clash be taken over by him from now on. Accordingly, they requested the court to grant the relevant order and permission as it is necessary to transfer these investigations to the CID on the basis of a court order in accordance with Section 125 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
