Acting Director of the National Dengue Control Unit, Dr. Kapila Kannangara, says that many hospitals in the Western Province have reached their maximum capacity for dengue patients. He further said that due to the rapid increase in dengue patients, the care of them has also become very difficult and risky.
He points out that due to the increase in the number of patients, there is a risk that the number of deaths will also increase in the future.
Dr. Kapila Kannangara further stated that out of the total 59,638 dengue patients currently reported in the island, 52.4% are reported from the Western Province.
Due to this, steps have been taken to implement a dengue eradication program for a week by selecting 22 health medical officer divisions with the highest percentage of patients in the Western Province and focusing on those areas.
The doctor further said that the progress will be reviewed at the end of that week and that this program is expected to be implemented accordingly.
