24-hour electricity to three northern islands

Residents of the islands of Nainativu (Nagadeepa), Analathivu and Delft will soon be able to have 24-hour uninterrupted electricity supply through a new hybrid renewable energy system currently under construction, Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka said

The Minister made this statement during an inspection tour of the project to check on its progress.

The Minister said that for a long time, these islands had to rely on diesel power plants for electricity generation, which was expensive and difficult to maintain due to the practical difficulties in transporting fuel by sea.

He also noted that the electricity supply to these islands was often disrupted, especially during periods of adverse weather conditions and natural disasters.

This project, named ‘Construction of Hybrid Renewable Energy Systems in Small Islands’, is being implemented at a cost of nearly US$ 11 million with financial assistance from the Government of India.
