Israel strikes Lebanon, killing 254 despite ceasefire

Israel carried out a series of airstrikes on commercial and residential areas in central Beirut, Lebanon, overnight. The attacks, which came hours after a US-Israeli ceasefire was declared in the war against Iran, killed at least 254 people and wounded 1,165, Al Jazeera reported.

The Israeli offensive included more than 100 airstrikes and was carried out without any prior warning, the media outlet reported.

Israel said yesterday that it had agreed to a ceasefire with Iran but that the ceasefire did not apply to attacks on Hezbollah militants. Israel says it has targeted Hezbollah bases in Lebanon and that its forces have avoided civilian areas as much as possible.
