The General Secretary of the party, Sagara Kariyawasam, says that the party has decided not to hold its May Day rally this year.
Participating in a press conference, he said that this decision had to be taken since the 1st of May falls on the 1st of May this year.
He says that the party has decided not to hold the rally on the 1st of May, giving priority to religious observances, in the backdrop of some monks saying that the scheduled Vesak Poya festival also falls on the 1st of May.
However, he said that the party will take steps to hold a massive rally on another day in May, considering the importance of celebrating workers’ rights.
Journalists questioned him about the allegations that the party was skipping the May Day rally due to the difficulty in mobilizing the people, and in response, he said that the party had already answered that question through the massive public meeting held on November 21st.
