US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has admitted that an Iranian warship off the coast of Sri Lanka was sunk by a US submarine, The Guardian reports.

“An Iranian naval vessel sailing south of Sri Lanka was sunk by a torpedo from a US submarine last night. This is the first time a ship has been sunk by a torpedo since World War II. This is the first attack outside the Middle East during the war with Iran,” Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said.

The Sri Lanka Navy has recovered the bodies of around 80 people who died in the attack while they were sailing close to the Sri Lankan coast. Further operations are underway.
