Giving Up Is Not the Solution in Sport – Message from Lasith Malinga

Following the defeat of the Sri Lanka national cricket team, who failed to advance beyond the Super 8 stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, former Sri Lanka captain Lasith Malinga posted a message on his Facebook account for fans who were saddened by the team’s loss. An excerpt from his post is given below.

Excerpt begins:

“Since the day our country won its first World Cup in 1996, many people who loved the sport may have moved away from it when we were eliminated in the early rounds and also after reaching the finals and losing four World Cup finals.

But everyone who believed that our country could win another World Cup endured the hardships and disappointments and continued to support both the game and the players — even with criticism — for 18 years until 2014. Because of that patience, we were able to win in 2014.

Therefore, there is no reason why we cannot win another World Cup. Now 12 years have passed, but there are still many people who understand the game and remain with it.

So, like me, they too will stay with the sport until we win the next World Cup. Giving up is not the solution in sport.”
