The Cabinet has approved the proposal to amend the existing regulations for the re-registration of subscriber information related to telephone SIM cards and introduce new regulations.
Accordingly, the Subscriber SIM Card Registration Regulations No. 01 of 2019 are scheduled to be amended.
In accordance with the provisions of the Sri Lanka Telecommunications Act No. 25 of 1991, the Subscriber SIM Card Registration Regulations No. 01 of 2019 were published on August 02, 2019 and those regulations are applicable only to SIM cards issued after that date.
Accordingly, the subscriber information of certain SIM cards obtained before 2019-08-02 is not in the possession of the telephone operator companies, which has created a problematic situation in certain legal investigations.
Furthermore, the government has also identified the need to amend the existing regulations to suit the current needs by including new provisions related to the registration of subscribers between the ages of 16-17 and the issuance of SIM cards to foreigners visiting the country.
Accordingly, the relevant proposal submitted to the Cabinet by the President as the Minister of Digital Economy to amend the relevant regulations has received the approval of the Cabinet.
