Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said in Parliament that a large number of people will lose their jobs due to the decision taken by a leading garment manufacturing company in the country to close its factories.
He said that the reason for this situation is the new Indo-US tariff agreement, which is putting Sri Lankan industries and exports at risk. Expressing further views, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said:
‘A deal has been signed between America and India. Through that deal, the 50% tariff imposed by America on India will be reduced to 18%. We told the government that at some point in geopolitics, that tariff will be reduced.
What will happen to our exporters now? Our tariff is two percent higher. What steps will the AKD brand take in this regard? Not only that, they have planned to close factories today. A major company is going to start its garment factories in other countries. We have been pointing out for some time that this situation is creating a serious crisis in the country.’
