The Uma Ela embankment in the Uvaparanagama area of the Badulla district was destroyed by the recent disaster. Subsequently, the farmers’ organizations in the area filled it with about 7000 sandbags and temporarily filled it with ash.
The Uma Ela, whose restoration work was completed, was released on the 17th. Minister Samantha Vidyarathna also participated in the event. Under the supervision of the Department of Irrigation and Regional Engineers, a group including the Army, Maha Sangha Ratnaya, representatives of the regional farmers’ organizations and residents contributed to the repair of Uma Ela.
Uma Ela mainly provides water for vegetable cultivation and more than five thousand farming families carry out their farming activities through it.
