The Getahawulpatha Asannaya embankment of the Uvaparanagama Uma Ela Irrigation Project in Badulla District was completely damaged by a landslide in the recent disaster. A group of people including representatives of local farmers’ organizations and residents were able to completely reconstruct the embankment within 7 days using about 7,000 sandbags.
In addition to the renovation of the embankment, the Perawella Uma Ela anvil, which was blocked, was also repaired. This canal project is about 17 kilometers long and more than five thousand farming families carry out their farming activities.
Plantations and Community Infrastructure Minister Samantha Vidyarathna and Member of Parliament Ravindra Bandara also inspected the Uma Ela irrigation project in Uvaparanagama, the Gatahawulpatha, and the Uma Ela embankment and Uma Ela inlet areas.
