Watagala is preparing to imprison those who slander the President for five years.

Deputy Minister of Public Security Sunil Watagala stated that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake is being slandered on social media. He said that this trend may increase in the next few days and if it does, it will become normal and stressed that such a situation should not be allowed to continue.

The Deputy Minister pointed out that most of these slanders are being made by people who are abroad. He said that although a state of emergency has been implemented in the country, no one has the ability to spread wrong ideas about the disaster situation under its regulations.

He also pointed out that there are provisions to impose a maximum sentence of one to five years in prison on such individuals. The Deputy Minister stated this while addressing a group of police officers.
