Anuradha Tennakoon, Chairman of the National Farmers’ Union, said that over 270,000 acres of paddy cultivation in the 2025/26 monsoon season have been completely destroyed by floods.
He also said that another 403,750 acres have been partially damaged, and the total number of acres that have been completely damaged is 274,250. The flood situation affected 22 districts and many cultivated lands have been damaged due to waterlogging and sand accumulation.
In the Trincomalee district, 15,000 acres have been completely damaged and 18,000 acres have been partially damaged. The Chairman said that 15,000 acres have been completely and 25,000 acres partially damaged in Batticaloa, 14,000 acres completely and 22,000 acres partially damaged in Kurunegala district.
Anuradha Tennakoon said that 11,000 acres have been completely and 13,000 acres partially damaged in Anuradhapura, 13,000 acres completely and 22,500 acres partially damaged in Pelonnaruwa, and 12,000 acres have been completely and 24,000 acres partially damaged in Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Jaffna and Mullaitivu districts.
He said that paddy cultivation in Badulla, Monaragala, Puttalam, Galle, Matara, Matale, Kandy, Gampaha, Colombo, Kalutara, Kegalle and Ratnapura districts has also been damaged.
