A motion has been submitted to the Kurunegala Municipal Council to recover Rs. 3.75 million from Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation Namal Karunaratne. The motion has been submitted to the council by the Opposition Leader of the Kurunegala Municipal Council, Sumedha Arunashantha, representing the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.
The motion states that this amount should be recovered for the expenses incurred by the Kurunegala Municipal Council in the case filed by Namal Karunaratne for narrow political purposes by spreading false information regarding the demolition of the Buwanekabahu Raja Sabha Pavilion. The motion has been submitted to the monthly meeting of the Kurunegala Municipal Council as a private motion.
“With the aim of gaining political advantage, the current Deputy Minister filed a case in the Court of Appeal seeking a writ of mandamus, making the Kurunegala Municipal Council, the Mayor and others respondents. The money that the Kurunegala Municipal Council had to spend innocently to appear for that should be recovered from the Deputy Minister,” Opposition Leader Sumedha Aruna Shantha told the media.
However, the case filed by Namal Karunaratne Thana was withdrawn due to a motion submitted to the Magistrate’s Court with strong evidence that the site was of no archaeological value. The motion states that Deputy Minister Namal Karunaratne should be recovered for the public money that the Kurunegala Municipal Council had to spend innocently by fabricating a false case in this situation.
