A septic tank (latrine) in a house in Pilana area of Galle district exploded, Habaraduwa Police said. The deceased is a 56-year-old resident of Pilana, Athawala.
The man had tried to add a chemical substance like carbide to the septic tank with the intention of producing gas. The explosion was reportedly caused by the pressure that arose there.
He was seriously injured and was immediately taken to hospital by the local residents, but it is reported that he had already died.
