BYD stops accepting payments for vehicles. What will happen to those who have paid

John Keells C.G. Auto (JKCG), the importer of BYD electric vehicles, has issued an official statement regarding the crisis that has arisen regarding the vehicles. Accordingly, the company has decided to suspend accepting orders for new vehicles until the case currently filed in court seeking to suspend the detention of one of the vehicles in customs custody is heard and concluded.

The statement says that it has requested the court for interim relief to release the electric vehicles (EVs) that have already been detained. The company also states that it is in discussions with Sri Lanka Customs to clear the remaining stocks of vehicles that have been unjustly detained.

Meanwhile, JKCG, which states that it expects a relevant committee appointed by Customs to consider the technical aspects, reiterates its willingness to have selected vehicle models tested at an internationally recognized independent automotive laboratory to help confirm and dispel any doubts about the motor capacity output of the vehicles. The company points out that such testing will ensure accuracy, reliability and consistency.

JKCG informs its customers that due to the longer than expected time frame for this issue, it has not been able to provide a firm delivery date for the electric vehicle (EV) models. Due to this, the company has offered three options for customers.

Switch to a BYD SEALION 6 plug-in hybrid vehicle with a special discount (if confirmed before October 10).

Get back the money they have paid with interest (before October 10).

Maintain your order until the customs decision or tax assessment is finalized.

Furthermore, while we will continue to accept orders for electric vehicles (EV), the company has decided not to request down payments until the issue is resolved.

John Keells CG Auto emphasizes that existing electric vehicle (EV) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) customers will continue to receive full support from BYD and JKCG for warranties, spare parts and related services.
