University of Wolverhampton responds about Ranil’s invitation

The University of Wolverhampton in England has confirmed that the invitation sent to former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was arrested for allegedly misusing public funds during a private visit to England, is genuine.

The former President’s Media Director General Dhanushka Ramanayake posted a copy of the letter on his social media account with a relevant note.

This letter was sent to Ranil Wickremesinghe to attend the ceremony to confer an honorary degree on the former President’s wife, Professor Maithri Wickremesinghe, in 2023.

The letter, sent by the University of Wolverhampton through the embassy at the time of the former President’s arrest, came under suspicion by the Attorney General’s Department. Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris argued before the court that for the invitation to be considered an official invitation, it must have been sent by the British government.
