US withdraws from UNESCO .

The United States has officially notified UNESCO of its decision to withdraw, citing inconsistency with US national interests and foreign policy priorities.

The announcement was made today to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay.

In a statement, US officials said they were concerned about UNESCO’s promotion of “divisive social and cultural causes” and its undue emphasis on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

They described it as part of a “global, ideological agenda” that was inconsistent with current US foreign policy.

Among the reasons for the withdrawal was UNESCO’s decision in 2011 to admit the “State of Palestine” as a full member. The move was also said to be contrary to US policy.

Under Article II(6) of the UNESCO Constitution, the United States’ withdrawal will officially take effect on December 31, 2026. Until then, the United States will remain a full member of the organization.
