The remedy of previous government’s for the conflict in the Pradeshiya Sabhas is giving this time too..

The Minister in charge of the subject, Dr. Chandana Abeyratne, says that local government institutions that have not been able to appoint a chairman and vice-chairman will be placed under the control of the commissioner in the future.

This situation has arisen because no party or group has gained majority power in some local government institutions after the last local government election, and both the ruling party and the opposition have made room to establish power.

The selection of the chairman and vice-chairman of many local government institutions was carried out through a secret ballot. However, due to the fact that the members of some local government institutions protested against the secret ballot and walked out of the assembly, a situation has arisen where those Pradeshiya Sabhas cannot meet without a quorum.

Even before this local government election, all local government institutions across the country were under the control of the commissioner for several years.
