Although the salt shortage in the country has now ended, consumers are alleging that the high price of salt is still at the same levels. Salt, which rose to prices of Rs. 300 and above during the salt shortage, is still at those prices.
Before the salt shortage, the price of a kilo of salt was around Rs. 120 and even though salt stocks have been brought in from India, the price has not come down. Meanwhile, Trade Minister Wasantha Samarasinghe stated that if wholesalers do not reduce the price of salt, a control price will be imposed on salt.
