The Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance for Medical and Civil Rights has demanded a formal investigation into whether doctors in prison hospitals have misused their privileges and engaged in irregularities.
Commenting on the rising allegations of irregularities in the Prisons Department, the organization’s Chairman, Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, told the media that action should be taken against senior officers and doctors in prison hospitals who issued fake medical reports to provide special facilities to prominent individuals, including politicians and senior officers on remand.
He noted that on several occasions, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, irregularities involving doctors issuing fake medical reports have been exposed in court.
