Losses due to strikes in 10 years exceed Rs. 3000 million

Professor Wasantha Athukorala of the Department of Economics and Statistics of the University of Peradeniya says that over Rs. 300 million have been lost due to strikes in the country over the past 10 years.

He stated that during the 10-year period, 386 strikes have taken place in the country, resulting in 662,388 working days lost to the country.

He also stated that 115,356 employees have been involved in the strikes, with 51 strikes occurring in 2018, the highest number of strikes.

He further stated that among the strikes, the highest number of strikes have occurred in the education, health, estates, transport and garment sectors.
