No budget allocation for new constitution work

”When will the drafting of a new constitution, a key election pledge of the government formed by the National People’s Power Party, take place,” asked Ilankai Tamil Arasu Party MP Shanakiyan Rasamanikkam in Parliament today.

Responding to this, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya said that the government has other priorities than initiating the process of drafting a new constitution for the country. Expressing further views, she said that when the government came to power last year, it focused its full attention on stabilizing the economy and consolidating democracy in the country by holding delayed elections.

Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya also stated that the government will begin the process of drafting a new constitution after the provincial council elections. She also admitted that the government has not allocated funds for the process in this year’s budget.

However, she also said that the current administration hopes to take forward the constitution-making process, which had already been initiated by the previous government, by consulting the public.
