Beware of Fake Websites During Election Season

The Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Response Team (SLCERT) is warning the general public to avoid clicking on links that promote the collection of personal information during the election period.

SLCERT Senior Information Security Engineer Charuka Damunupola informed the media that a website was discovered targeting the presidential election, collecting sensitive personal information under the guise of offering official services.

“This fake website closely resembles the official website of the Election Commission. It advertised the recruitment of new employees for various public sector vacancies ahead of the elections. The website claimed that a portal was open to accept new applications free of charge. Applicants were asked to fill out a questionnaire with their personal information, and at the end, they were instructed to share the final link in several WhatsApp groups,” he added.

The Election Commission has received complaints and has requested an inquiry into the matter. Two victims also reported the issue to SLCERT, and steps have now been taken to shut down the site.
