Women will soon be mandated to be commanders of the armed forces.

Minister of State for Defense Premita Bandara Thennakone said the government plans to change the existing legal framework to enable women to head the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Speaking in parliament, he said that a woman can only reach the rank of major in the army and that the government is planning to change the military rules to allow women to be promoted and eventually head the armed forces.
