According to police sources, a person suspected to be an underworld gunman was killed in a gunfight with the soldiers of the Police Special Task Force (STF) in Ganemulla area last night.
The suspect shot at the Special Task Force officers who were searching a house in Sumedha Mawatha, Ganemulla last night based on an intelligence tip-off. The suspect, who was seriously injured by the police firing again, died while undergoing treatment at Ragama Hospital. A member of the Police Special Task Force was also injured in the exchange of fire.
Meanwhile, in the special operation launched under the ‘Yukthiya’ operation, 19 persons directly related to the underworld have been arrested since Tuesday.
In response to the increase in organized crime activities in the Western and Southern provinces, a special operation targeting 20 organized crime gangs identified in the island under the ‘Yukthiya’ program was launched on Tuesday.
