The local government election is postponed for the second time

The Election Commission has announced that despite various obstacles to conduct the local government polls as scheduled, due to non-availability of the necessary financial allocations and reasons beyond the control of the Commission, it is not possible to hold the said polls on the 25th of this month. Accordingly, the commission states in its announcement that the local government polls have to be postponed for the second time.

Therefore, the election commission says that the date will have to be decided on the basis of the decision given by the court after the confirmation of a specific date for obtaining the money required for conducting the election by the relevant local authorities or according to the proceedings before the Supreme Court.

However, it is further stated in the announcement signed by Election Commissioner General Saman Sri Ratnayake that all measures taken by the Election Commission to conduct the local government polls promptly will be continued.
