Karnataka passes Menstrual Leave Act.

The Karnataka government in India has given one day of paid leave per month to women. This is to ensure the convenience of women during their monthly periods.

Accordingly, it is mandatory for all institutions in Karnataka, both public and private, where women are employed, to provide 12 days of paid leave per year to women. This law will come into effect from October 9.

The Karnataka cabinet’s approval of the Karnataka Menstrual Leave Policy 2025 shows the state government’s commitment to women’s health in the country and Indian media indicates that it will be followed by other states soon.

One day of menstrual leave has already been given to government employees in Odisha and Bihar. A similar policy is in place in universities in Kerala.
