Leader of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Member of Parliament Rauf Hakim says that no matter who resigns from the COPE committee, he will not leave. Responding to a media query, he said that according to his party’s opinion, he decided to remain in the COP committee.
He further said that it is the opinion of his party’s group of MPs that there should be at least one MP representing the opposition in the COPE Committee, otherwise the government will handle the COPE Committee according to its discretion.
11 opposition MPs who represented the committee have resigned against the appointment of Podujana Peramuna Member of Parliament Rohitha Abeygunawardena as the chairman of the COP committee. Parliament member Naleen Bandara had previously said that if Rohitha Abeygunawardena does not step down from the chairmanship of the COP committee, he will start a hunger strike in the parliament.
