‘Who borrowed the most ? Ranil or Anura? Verity Research answers

Verity Research has released a new report on the current government’s borrowing.

According to the report, the current government has borrowed less than the total amount of borrowing it can borrow from last October to the end of this month.

According to the 2024 estimate, the amount of borrowing the government expects to borrow this year for gross fiscal requirements is Rs. 3670 billion.

The Ranil Wickremesinghe administration has borrowed Rs. 1903 billion for the 9-month period from last January to September. Accordingly, the current government has the ability to borrow Rs. 1766 billion for the period from last October to the end of this month.

However, when reviewing the borrowing estimates for this period, it has been revealed that the amount of borrowing to be taken is Rs. 1612 billion.

However, during the period from October to November, the total domestic debt has increased by only 371 billion rupees, and the current government has the capacity to borrow another 659 billion rupees this month, says Verite Research.

In light of this situation, the opposition group recently accused the government of having borrowed excessively.
