Regarding the letter sent by the Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha to the IGP requesting security, which is circulating in the media.
Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lasantha Wickramasekera was shot dead by an unknown person in the official room of the Pradeshiya Sabha on 22.10.2025.
A letter sent to the IGP, stating that the deceased has received threats to his life and requesting that necessary security be provided in this regard, is currently circulating in the mainstream media and social media.
The Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha, Lasantha Wickramasekera, has sent a letter to the IGP on 2025.09.06 requesting him to provide security and the IGP has sent it to the Senior DIG, Southern Province on 2025.09.12 to take further necessary action in relation to that letter.
Accordingly, the Senior DIG, Southern Province has sent the above letter to the DIG, Matara-Hambantota District and has informed the Headquarters Inspector of Police, Weligama and the OIC, Midigama through the Senior Superintendent of Police, Matara, to take further action.

However, in a statement to the Weekend Anidda newspaper, Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala has said that since the name of the Chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha is on the IRC list, he cannot be provided with police security.
