The case regarding the incident in which the jeep driven by MP Ashoka Ranwala collided with a car and injured three people was taken up before Mahara Chief Magistrate Bandara Ilangasinghe at the Mahara Magistrate’s Court today (19).
Although the case was taken up before the court today, the medical report including the urine and blood samples of the suspect Ashoka Ranwala had not been submitted to the court. The police informed the court that the medical report related to the incident has been forwarded to the Government Medical Examiner and the results have not yet been received.
The suspect MP, who is still receiving treatment at the National Hospital, had also not been produced in court today. A team of lawyers presented a medical certificate in court on his behalf.
The lawyer representing the respondent MP Ashoka Ranwala told the court that action could be taken to provide Rs. 50,000 to the woman who sustained injuries to her leg and Rs. 25,000 each to the child and his mother in the initial stage.
The husband of the woman who sustained severe injuries to her leg informed the court that he was not prepared to receive the amount.
Regarding the fact that Sakkara Ashoka Ranwala was still in the hospital, the Magistrate asked the police whether it was the plaintiff or the defendant who was injured in the incident.
The Sapugaskanda Police officers who responded stated that the people travelling in the plaintiff’s car had been injured and hospitalized.
The Magistrate again asked why the suspect was still in the hospital if he was not injured.
The lawyer representing the suspect said that his client, Ashoka Ranwala, is still receiving treatment in hospital as his physical fitness is not yet good.
After considering the facts, Magistrate Bandara Ilangasinghe ordered the temporary cancellation of Ashoka Ranwala’s driving license. In addition, the Magistrate ordered that he attend a fitness test at the National Institute of Transport Medicine after his return from the hospital and submit a report.
The case is scheduled to be heard again on January 16, 2026.
