Chairman of the United National Party, Member of Parliament Vajira Abeywardena says that even if one is 75 years of age, one can engage in public service and the constitution has made room for it.
He gave this answer in response to a journalist’s question regarding the government policy of giving two service extensions to the Inspector General of Police and retiring from public service at the age of 60.
When a journalist asked why CD Wickramaratne was retained in the position even after the end of his tenure when there were many senior officers in the Sri Lanka Police, the MP replied that a officer who had been out of service for five years was appointed as Inspector General of Police after Mrs. Chandrika Kumaratunga came to power in 1994. and there is no need to create a problem in that regard.
