The United States and Israel launched a joint strike on the Bushehr nuclear facility in Iran on Tuesday afternoon. Iran’s official news agency IRNA said there were no casualties or damage to the facility.
The Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, expressed his deep concern about the attack. He said in a statement that all parties must exercise “maximum restraint” to ensure nuclear security in times of conflict.
Iran says targeting nuclear facilities used for peaceful purposes is a violation of international law and a serious threat to regional security. Iran says that by attacking such power plants, the US and Israel are putting even its friendly Gulf states in danger. Iran points out that any damage to the power plant could have caused a serious situation due to the radiation effects.
The attack came just hours after US President Donald Trump said that there were “good and productive” peace talks with Iran.
