Three killed in bad weather

Three people have died due to disasters that have occurred in the island due to the bad weather conditions.

These incidents were reported from the areas of Peradeniya, Ruwanwella and Thambuttegama.

One person died yesterday (19) due to flash floods that occurred in the Thambuttegama area of ​​Anuradhapura following heavy rainfall.

Meanwhile, a 72-year-old man has died after being buried under a mound of earth in the Peradeniya area.

The accident occurred when the person in question was walking near a canal when a mound of earth nearby collapsed on him.

Meanwhile, in the Magammana area of ​​Ruwanwella, a person who was trying to cross a canal with a stick during heavy rainfall fell into the canal and drowned. The deceased is a 54-year-old man.

Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Center says that nearly 600 people belonging to 144 families in 03 districts have been affected by the adverse weather conditions.

The center stated that 101 houses have been partially damaged due to accidents caused by the adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, the Irrigation Department states that the water level of the Deduru Oya is continuing to rise in the Moragaswewa area due to heavy rains.

Due to this, the Department stated that the flood risk advisory issued for the low-lying areas of the Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pallama, Chilaw, Rasnayakepura and Arachchikattuwa Divisional Secretariats in the Deduru Oya basin will continue to be valid.

Landslide warnings have been issued for identified Divisional Secretariat Divisions in 09 districts due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions.

The National Building Research Organization says that landslide warnings at level 02, i.e., alert, have been issued for the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Ududumbara and Yatinuwara in the Kandy district, and Aranayake, Mawanella, Kegalle, Dehiowita and Yatiyanthota in the Kegalle district.

In addition, landslide warnings at level 01, i.e., alert, have been issued for 35 Divisional Secretariat Divisions in the districts of Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura.
