Archbishop Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has expressed his concern over the failure to fulfill the promise made in the National People’s Power manifesto regarding the investigation into the Easter attacks and the failure to launch even a basic program for that purpose. Addressing a church service, he expressed his views as follows.
“No matter how much we talk about the terrible attack that took place six years ago, it seems like the story will never end. We still have not been able to find out who the group behind this scheme was. We still cannot find out, no matter how hard we try. If we continue to do this work for six years, we are disrespecting the lives of those people.
No political leader or party has so far taken action to implement any of the more than 200 recommendations in the first volume of the Presidential Commission Report, nor has a proper mechanism been initiated in this regard.
In particular, it is stated that the Attorney Generals and the Department have not taken any ill-advised or disciplinary action against the former President, Prime Minister, and high-ranking officials of the police and security forces, who knew about this great disaster in advance but did nothing despite having official responsibility to prevent it, as recommended in this report. With deep regret. It must be said that it is shameful that the Attorney General’s Department has not done anything about this so far.
During the last election campaign, the government had made a promise to the victims of the Easter attacks. It must also be stated with regret that the promise made to the country to establish a Special Prosecutor and an office with the powers to guide and assist in the forensic investigations into this matter and to conduct the proceedings in this regard has not been fulfilled so far.
