Journalist Tharindu Uduwaragedara has submitted a petition to the Supreme Court asking for a ruling that certain provisions of the bill on the security of online systems submitted by the government to the parliament are against the constitution.
The petitioner claims that some of the provisions contained in the relevant bill violate other fundamental human rights including freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the Constitution.
Accordingly, the petitioner requests the Supreme Court to rule that if the relevant bill is to be passed, it must be approved by a two-thirds majority vote in the Parliament and it must also be approved by a referendum. The Attorney General has been named as the respondent.
