Political sources say that the attempt made by several MPs of the Podujana Peramuna to pass a resolution in the Parliament to get a general election before the presidential election has failed.
The sources further say that this situation has arisen due to the inability to secure the simple majority of 113 MPs required for the adoption of such a proposal.
Former National Organizer of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Basil Rajapaksa, when he met President Ranil Wickremesinghe, called for the dissolution of Parliament to announce an emergency general election before the constitutionally scheduled presidential election in October this year.
President Ranil Wickramasinghe said at that time that since the current parliament can be held until 2025, if an election is held before then, it must be agreed by the majority of the members.
The majority of MPs are against it, saying that the dissolution of Parliament was a decision taken for the political survival of the Rajapaksas.
