The MP and the MP who were said to have been kidnapped by an underworld group by the supporters of the National People’s Power were found on the Unawatuna beach in Galle this evening (27).
The abductees were MP Ajith Priyantha and MP Kamani Mala Alwis, representing the National People’s Power. However, the Police Media Division stated that no harm was done to either of them.
The couple were on their way to the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha today to vote for the chairmanship of the party, and a tense situation erupted in the council after it was claimed that they had been kidnapped.
According to the results of the vote, the National People’s Power had won 22 seats, while the number of seats held by other parties and independent groups, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, was also 22. Accordingly, a sharp competition had been created. However, when the council’s proceedings began at around 9.30 am under the chairmanship of the Southern Local Government Commissioner to elect the chairman, the two councillors were not present.
As a result, the supporters of the National People’s Force opposed the convening of the council. They requested the Local Government Commissioner to suspend the proceedings of the council until the two abducted councillors returned, but at that time she had said that it was impossible since the council had a quorum.
A group of supporters of the National People’s Force entered the council chamber and protested. In view of this tense situation, the Southern Local Government Commissioner took steps to adjourn the council with the expectation of reconvening the council within 30 days.
