The government has not yet decided to support the proposal to repeal the Online Act.

It is learnt that the National People’s Power (JP) government has not yet decided whether to support the Private Member’s Bill submitted by New Democratic Front MP Ravi Karunanayake to repeal the Internet Security Act No. 09 of 2024.

A gazette notification was issued on the 8th announcing the ‘Internet Security Act Repeal Bill’.

Expressing his views on whether the National People’s Power will support the passage of this bill in Parliament, National People’s Power General Secretary and Member of Parliament Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe said that a decision has not yet been taken on the matter.

“We are currently engaged in election-related activities. We want to discuss this, but we have not had the opportunity yet. We will do it in the coming days,” he said.

The Internet Security Act, passed during the tenure of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe in early 2024, was introduced with the aim of curbing online abuse, cyberbullying and harmful digital content.

Several court orders have already been issued under this act.
