Syrians are taking to the streets and public squares as opposition fighters enter the capital, Damascus, toppling President Bashar al-Assad’s rule, foreign media reports.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has already fled the city to an unknown destination, the media reported.
The rebels have declared a “new era” free of reprisals after the capture of Damascus. Syrians who have fled the country for various reasons have been invited to return.
Hadi al-Bahra, head of the Syrian opposition coalition , has declared Damascus “free from al-Assad.” Prime Minister Mohammed Ghazi al-Jalali has reportedly said he is staying at home, willing to cooperate with the opposition, and wants to ensure the continued functioning of state institutions.
The army is reportedly fleeing from opposition fighters and fighters are reportedly trying to free prisoners held at the Sednaya prison north of Damascus.
Abu Mohamed al-Julani, the head of the main fighting group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, has ordered opposition fighters not to attack any public institutions or services.
Bashar al-Assad and his father Hafez al-Assad, have ruled the country for more than 50 years, and the opposition coalition says this is the end of that era.
